Astros end postseason frustration

ST. LOUIS (AP) _ After losing five games in their history that

would have clinched a National League pennant, the Houston Astros

can finally say they are headed to the World Series.

The Astros won the first National League championship of their

44-year history tonight beating the St. Louis Cardinals 5-to-1 in

Game Six of the N-L-C-S.

Houston's heartbreakers go back to 1980 when they lost three

games to two to Philadelphia in what was then a best-of-five league

championship series.

Six years later they fell to the New York Mets in the N-L-C-S

four games to two. Then there was last season, when the Astros went

to St. Louis needing just one win for the N-L pennant, but they

lost Games Six and Seven.

The Astros' first World Series appearance comes 45 years after

Houston was awarded an expansion franchise at a National League

meeting in Chicago. The Astros open the World Series in the Windy

City Saturday night.
