Astros are latest Wild Card team to reach World Series

UNDATED (AP) _ The secret to reaching the World Series seems to

be clinching a wild-card berth first.

Tonight, the Houston Astros became the fourth straight wild card

team to reach the World Series beating the St. Louis Cardinals

5-to-1 to win the N-L-C-S four games to two.

The previous three World Series champions have all been

wild-card teams starting with the Anaheim Angels in 2002, followed

by the 2003 Florida Marlins and the 2004 Boston Red Sox.

San Francisco reached the World Series in 2002 as a wild card

but lost to Anaheim. The 2000 New York Mets won the N-L crown as a

wild-card team but lost to the Yankees in the World Series.

The 1997 Florida Marlins were the first wild-card team to reach

the World Series and beat Cleveland four games to three.
