Former Nacogdoches County Justice of Peace Hubert Johnson has been found guilty of third degree felony theft. The verdict came after a couple days of testimony involving missing funds from the JP1 office.
Visiting Judge Joe Clayton probated a five year prison term. A thirty day jail sentence will be suspended if Johnson performs 350 hours of community service. Johnson also must pay $5,000 dollars in restitution.
A former clerk who is also indicted for stealing money recorded conversations she had with Johnson for the Texas Rangers. Those conversations implied Johnson had taken money.
In 2002 the county auditor's office discovered $60,000 was missing from the office.
