Angelina County Judge Announces Retirement

by Jessica Cervantez

It is no secret that Angelina County Judge Joe Berry is ready to retire.

"I'm 65-years-old and I'm ready to go to the house," Judge Berry said.

Berry has been the county judge in Angelina for 15 years. Before then, he was a county commissioner, and worked in law enforcement.

He is announcing his retirement, but he's not walking out the door just yet. That won't happen until December 31, 2006.

Judge Berry said, "I still have 13 months so don't kick me out the door yet."

The county has seen a lot of changes since Judge Berry took office.

"When I was county commissioner the expo that was paid for was a big deal... also, the farmers market."

As far as who will be filling his shoes, he hopes it is someone youthful, and someone who has a lot of patience

Judge Berry says he has already heard some names being thrown out as his possible replacements. He expects even more names will start circulating, because of his retirement announcement.
