A group called the Students For Environmental Awareness is opposing the proposed location of the new SFA baseball park. The property off University Drive contains a manmade wetland area. The students want it protected.
SFA administrators have plans to purchase a natural wetland to make up for the loss. Physical Plant Director John Rulfs said, "The land that we're offering as mitigation land is an East Texas bog, which is a rare area - rare plants in it - and we're offering about 20 acres to offset the 2.9 acres that are being taken."
The university is now negotiating with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps has indicated it will approve the mitigation property.
