Local Artist Creating Memorials

When Huntington school teacher Kim Pinner isn't busy with her 5th grade class, you can probably find her at East Texas Monument Company in Lufkin. She's an artist who creates headstones, but her work is not limited to that alone.

While all of Kim's pieces are special, one of the most recognized pieces is dedicated to slain Huntington Police Officer John Logan. It is now a permanent fixture in Centennial Park in Huntington.

"I felt very honored and humble to be able to give something back to the community that I have worked in for twenty years," Pinner said. "For me it was a chance to give back part of myself."

Kim never had a chance to meet Officer Logan, but she came to know him through her work. "After working with him and looking at his pictures and his friends and family coming up talking to me, I really felt like I know him."

Kim says it tugs at the heart creating this kind of art, but she hopes it brings closure for loved ones. "It's very personal...It always feels like I get to know the person and it helps put closure to a death in a family."
