Veterans Spread Holiday Cheer

More than a hundred East Texas veterans will have Thanksgiving dinner, thanks to the Disabled American Veterans.

The DAV in Lufkin donated almost $4,000 worth of food to less fortunate vets and their families. One hundred twenty-six boxes were filled with stuffing, vegetables, and of course, a turkey.

It took all morning to get the donations ready. The vets even delivered boxes to those who couldn't make it to the center.

Teresa Johniken, Commander of Chapter 84, said, "We have people who come in and apply for help - their husband was a veteran and they're a widow. There are children of veterans, and then if someone really needs something, you don't have to be a veteran, we'll help you anyway."

The DAV raised money for this project through bingo. They'll donate more boxes of food during the Christmas holiday season.
