Holidays Can Be Difficult for Retirees

Getting into the holiday spirit is easy for most of us, but the season can be a difficult time for the elderly; especially for those who can't be with their families for Christmas.

The staff at Pinecrest retirement community in Lufkin spends the entire month of December decorating and celebrating. They throw several parties for their residents and even let the clients help trim the tree.

The residents also have a party to thank the staff.

Joy Rich, marketing director for Pinecrest, said, "I walked by the other day giving a tour and they were baking cookies, and the residents were helping them. That brought a smile to everybody's face; plus it smelled good too."

Several Pinecrest residents are evacuees from hurricanes Rita and Katrina that decided to make Lufkin their permanent home.
