Pope Says True Gift Of Christmas Is Joy, Not Costly Present

ROME Pope Benedict says the true gift of Christmas is not an expensive present, but joy.

The pope tells parishioners at a church in Rome that joy liberates people. He says people can bring joy with a smile or an act of kindness.

Benedict today made his first visit to a Rome church as pontiff. He returned to what had been his honorary church for 16 years as cardinal.

The pope is keeping up the tradition of his predecessor, John Paul, who spent many Sunday mornings visiting Rome's parishes.
