Time to Count the Signatures

At least 3,366 verified signatures out of 19,000 registered voters are needed to force a wet-dry election in Angelina County. Shawn Breaux, an 18-year-old Lufkin resident, has turned in all of his signatures for the alcohol petition he's been working on for months.

Election Administrator Bill Shanklin says that, apparently, 4,200 signatures were submitted. Now, it's time to count and verify the signatures.

Shanklin said, "We're deep in that right now. We have two people working full time on it. We're finding a lot of people that signed it weren't registered voters at all or didn't live in JP precinct one."

If there are enough valid signatures, they will be submitted to the commissioner's court and, then, the court will have 30 days to order an election.
