Drug Use Up Among Girls

New research findings show drug use among girls is on the rise. In fact, there are now more girls than boys turning to drugs.

Overall drug use is down almost 20% since 2001. But, for girls, drug use is going up. More girls than boys are reporting they have started drinking, smoking cigarettes, and smoking marijuana.

Drug-free advocates believe there are many reasons for this trend.

Phyllis Grandgeorge, Alcohol & Drug Abuse Council, said, "They are having to mature at a younger age, or they are expected to mature at a younger age. They are involved in relationships that are complicated, and I think fashion has a lot to do with it."

While the overall use of drugs has decreased parents are urged to pay close attention to their children. That is widely seen as the best way to keep kids off drugs.
