Freedom Fighters: Bob Johnson

Bob Johnson's book "Gidi Gidi Boom Boom" is about his experiences in World War Two as a B-24 gunner and prisoner of war. Johnson didn't talk about his experiences for years. Even his family never questioned him about the war. But after reading "The Greatest Generation" and meeting with other veterans, Johnson decided to tell his story. After three years of research, including a trip to Bulgaria, "Gidi Gidi Boom Boom" was published. The book gets its' name from good luck charms, "gidi gidis", worn by Singalese fishermen. For forty missions, the plane's luck held. But on a bombing mission to Romania, "Gidi Gidi Boom Boom was shot down and the crew was taken prisoner in Bulgaria Johnson's book tells of life as a POW, and even goes into the war criminal trials held after the war. "Gidi Gidi Boom Boom", by Robert H. Johnson, can be purchased through Amazon.com
