About four million Americans are infected with Hepatitis C.
Hundreds of those infected are right here in East Texas. The disease attacks the liver and can be contracted through blood transfusions or by using needles for drug use or tattoos. Many of the infected have had the disease for several years without knowing it.
Dr. Dickson Odero, who specializes in infectious diseases, said, "The new infections are getting fewer and fewer. What are we seeing now are old infections, the new infections we don't just see as many of them, simply because people are becoming more aware. There is now more health effort, blood transfusion is clean, and there is availability of clean needles if people care to use it."
Medicines that treat Hepatitis C are very expensive. They can run about $3-thousand a month.
