Facial Lipoatrophy

It’s about looking and feeling better

Facial Lipoatrophy is a natural part of the aging process. The loss of facial fat can be severe in some people, which leaves them feeling older than they are. Facial contouring with Radiesse™ can restore volume to the cheek (malar) and jaw line areas, providing a natural looking, long-lasting result.

HIV-associated facial lipoatrophy While the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has proven successful in reducing the number of deaths from advanced HIV disease, many HAART patients living with HIV are left with noticeable changes in body fat and metabolic disturbances. For these patients, HIV-associated facial lipoatrophy – also known as facial wasting – is a constant reminder of their illness.

But now, Radiesse is being used successfully to shape and contour the face affected by this HIV treatment. A recent clinical study, Drs. Eviatar (et. al.) , used Radiesse to treat 100 patients with HIV-associated facial lipoatrophy and found the injectable filler to be a safe, effective, and long-lasting option for facial soft tissue augmentation in these patients.

The clinical study showed that 100% of patients treated with Radiesse had improved facial contours at their six month follow-up visit after the initial injection. 90% of patients rated their results as “Very Much Improved” or “Much Improved”. The tissue that formed in the cheek from the Radiesse injection appeared soft to the touch, with the same texture found in normal soft facial tissue. In addition, no nodules, granulomas or migration of material was observed in any of the study subjects.
