Clinic Provided Free Cervical Cancer Screenings

Many East Texas women took advantage of a free life-saving health screening Friday. Planned Parenthood in Lufkin provided free pap tests. The exams are the primary screening test for cervical cancer.

About 14,000 women are diagnosed with the disease every year in the U.S., more than 4,000 of them die. Cervical cancer was once the most common cause of death for American women, but improvements in pap exams have changed that.

Michelle Green, community services director for Planned Parenthood, said, "This is such a need here in East Texas; women that do not have insurance, that have not had their pap tests in many years, and so we're just offering that cervical cancer screening."

Women should have a pap test every year. Cervical cancer is nearly 100 percent curable when detected early.
