Hurricane Preparedness

Just nine days until hurricane season begins, and Lufkin city leaders believe they are ready.

Debbie Fitzgerald, who is in charge of the emergency operations satellite facility, said, "We're more prepared then last year, but Lufkin did a wonderful job, we housed over 17-thousand people."

Members of Lufkin's emergency management team have been busy preparing for the next hurricane season for a while now. And, they hope East Texans are also planning ahead.

Fitzgerald said, "You can get a box or tote, and put a first aid kit, radio with batteries, food for several days, can openers, extra clothes, just in case something would happen."

In a hurricane situation, Lufkin's main responsibility will be to house up to 10-thousand evacuees. So, the city wants residents to have a plan in case they find themselves without power, shelter, or food.
