New Orleans Family Makes History in Lufkin

by Ramonica R. Jones

The tragic story of a New Orleans family that fled Hurricane Katrina has a happy ending. Tiffany Jackson and her mother, Anna Williams, are the first evacuees to close on a home through the Section 8 Home Ownership Program.

They were one of the first Katrina families to come to Lufkin after the storm. Now, after almost 10 months in hotels and apartments, they're able to buy a home in Lufkin.

The family evacuated to Lufkin with 12 other people after their home was completely destroyed in the hurricane.

Tiffany Jackson said, "Everybody's been so nice here. The people are really really nice and since we've been here, we've been able to purchase a car and now, my mom's getting ready to purchase her home. We just love it here. It's just been a blessing."

Anna Williams found out she qualified for a home loan after the Red Cross hooked her up with the Deep East Texas Council of Governments (DETCOG).
