Freedom Fighter: Richard Lockhart

The Lockhart family of Tyler are big on tradition, whether it's growing plants or preserving freedom. Richard Lockhart's father, Jim, established "J.R. Lockhart and Son Nursery" in 1959. Jim now runs the family business.

Jim Lockhart served in the Navy for thirty years and fought in the Vietnam War. Richard fought in Desert Shield and Desert Storm and fought in Iraq again in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

A nearby rocket explosion cost Richard his hearing in his left ear. Richard will soon be presented a Purple Heart in a special ceremony. It will join the many commendation medals he received while serving in the Marine Corps.

Ricard Lockhart says that he is so impressed with many young heroes serving America in Iraq. But he also says he's saddened that the news media doesn't publicize their deeds, choosing instead to publicise the enemies' actions.
