Homestead Exemption Continues

Taxpayers in the Nacogdoches Independent School District will continue to benefit from a local homestead exemption on their school taxes. Interim Superintendent David Sharp is no longer recommending the exemption be eliminated. Monday afternoon Sharp told school board members a closer look at the state's new school funding plan shows there will be only a minor impact on local funding. "It does not warrant, it does not create a positive enough increase in your revenue in my opinion to take the steps as a district to do away with that homestead at this time," said Sharp. He should be replaced by July 10 by a permanent superintendent.

NISD and most entities in Nacogdoches County offer the local homestead exemption. Lufkin ISD and about two thirds of the school districts across the state do not. Sharp still advises the board to continue studying the option.
