Woman Accused of Mistreating Elderly Patients Took the Stand

An East Texas woman accused of injuring elderly patients left in her care testified Wednesday on her behalf in Lufkin. Sharon Boulware told the jury she prepared meals, did laundry, and took good care of several senior citizens that lived with her.

Boulware also said several reputable agencies referred new clients to her home in Huntington, even though their families knew it was not a nursing home. She opened a home health care center in 1999, but wasn't licensed or registered as a health care provider.

One woman ended up with severe bedsores, but recovered after surgery. A man died one hour after leaving Boulware's home.

She could get life in prison if convicted.
