The Stewart Regional Blood Center in Lufkin is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. Thursday, city and community leaders attended a reception at the Lufkin donor facility.
The blood center collects about 3,000 units of blood a month through in-center donations and mobile blood drives. One blood donation can save the lives of three patients, but as one donor said, giving blood can also save the donor's life.
Tommy Langston said, "We found cancer in '03 in my stomach, and within 45 days of trying to donate blood, I had my stomach removed and I'm now undergoing treatment, and successfully so far."
