Wildfires Cost Texas Millions of Dollars a Year

Every summer, wildfires cost the State of Texas millions of dollars in property damage. That's why some experts want to see a 'Wildfire Protection Plan'.

They believe a plan would help with much-needed pre-fire planning and training. Angelina County has gotten more rain than other areas of Texas lately, but East Texans should still do their part to protect against wildfires.

State Forester and Director James Hull said, "They need to understand that 95% of all the wildfires in Texas are started by people, and so just being very careful with fires, that would be a great thing."

Between 2005 and 2006, Texas lost $500 million in property to wildfires. Some believe developing a Wildfire Protection Plan' would cut the state's losses by 80 percent.
