Shoppers Take Advantage of Tax-Free Weekend

Thousands of East Texans stocked up on school clothes and other items during the eighth annual Sales Tax holiday.

The Lufkin Mall was busy all weekend. This year's attendance at the mall jumped more than 27 percent compared to last year's crowd over the same weekend. That's about 54,000 shoppers over all three days.

In addition to many tax exempt items up for grabs, mall managers said extra retail discounts helped bring out the shoppers.

City leaders won't know how well the community as a whole did on tax-free weekend until they get the sales-tax receipts in October.
