Battle of the Banks Begins

by Ramonica R. Jones

The annual Battle of the Banks began Friday in Lufkin. The Stewart Regional Blood Center hosted the event to recruit life-savers.

For the next week, mobile blood units will go to eight area banks in search of blood donors. Each bank is competing to sign up the most donors.

Several people showed up at Angelina Savings Bank in Lufkin Friday to give the gift of life. Last year, 237 East Texans donated during the Battle of the Banks.

Lynne Booker said, "What it is is a friendly competition between all the banks in Lufkin and they've all been recruiting donors. They each have a specific day when our blood mobile will be here drawing blood and it's just a fun way to get people to donate blood."

This is the toughest time of year to get blood donors because many families are still vacationing. Some of the banks involved are even offering incentives like prize giveaways to bring in the blood donors.
