Wastewater Rates Could Soon Go Up

Lufkin city leaders are talking about raising water and wastewater rates by three percent. Rising electricity rates are the reason.

Lowering the tax rate is also on Tuesday night's agenda, but before city council members make any decisions there will be two public hearings so they can review the plans with Lufkin residents.

Mayor Jack Gorden said, "I think the council will be dealing with the probability of creating an effective tax rate that is somewhat less than the tax rate last year, which is wonderful news for taxpayers. For the first time in a long time, they will see a small decrease in that effective tax rate."

If the proposal passes, the new tax rate will be just over a third of a percent of last year's rate of .5585. The new rate would start October 1st.
