Counterfeiting Checks is Getting Easier

Passing bogus checks is becoming a popular crime in our area and duplicating paper payments is not as complicated as you think.

Most thieves use computer software to counterfeit checks. Others have a more sophisticated way of changing payees' names and bank account information.

Investigators said businesses are more of a target for counterfeit checks than individuals, but information used to commit the crime can come from anywhere.

Tearing up bank statements, receipts, and other information thieves can steal is a good idea, but shredding that information is even better.
