Child Support Collections

Austin-Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott announced that child support his office collected today topped $2 billion with 15 days remaining in the state fiscal year that will end Aug. 31. Today's record-breaking collections exceed last year's collections by $140 million. Attorney General Abbott is on target to collect more than $7 billion since he took office in December 2002.

"There is nothing more important than making sure Texas children receive the child support they need to succeed in life," said Attorney General Abbott. "The employees of my office's Child Support Division deserve recognition for reaching this milestone ahead of schedule. THe money they collected will make a difference in the lives of children who rely on child support to give them a fair start in life."

Texas is recognized as one of the best child support enforcement agencies in the nation. The stat's collection growth of 18 percent between federal fiscal year 2004 and 2005 is the largest in the nation. Texas is second only to California in the amount of child support collected.
