High School Senior Killed in Wreck

by Ramonica R. Jones

A small town is mourning the loss of a student. He was killed in a car wreck just north of Wells last Sunday night.

Eighteen year old Nathon Lewis died in the crash. Troopers said his classmate, 18-year-old Oreal Nash, was speeding north on County Road 2734 when he jumped a bridge then lost control of the vehicle. The car hit a ditch, went through a fence, and hit several trees.

Lewis died at a hospital. Nash and another passenger, 17-year-old Catherine Kern of Lufkin, were both treated and released.

Lewis is the sixth Wells student to die in seven years.

Principal Mike Alberts said, "Nathon was the heart and soul of his class. Nathon's gonna be severely missed; not always the greatest academic student, but he was the kid - when anybody was down - that they looked to to bring them back up."

Nathon's funeral is at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Wells Auditorium. To help his family with expenses, you can donate to the Wells Community Fund or call the Wells I.S.D. superintendent's office.
