Police Have a Warning for Drivers at School Crossings

Lufkin police are reminding drivers about the dangers of driving through a school crossing.

Motorists should never enter a crosswalk while a crossing guard is in the roadway. Drivers should stay out of that area until it is clear of all students and crossing guards, but police officers are seeing a lot of drivers ignoring the laws.

Lt. David Young said, "Motorists are actually stopping for the crossing guard, but as the crossing guard is coming back toward the curb, the motorists are taking off through the crosswalk while the students and the crossing guard are still in there. As long as that crossing guard is holding that stop sign up, no vehicle should enter the crosswalk."

Drivers ticketed for failure to obey a school crossing guard face a fine of up to $500.
