Police Investigate Expensive Criminal Mischief

by Ramonica R. Jones

Lufkin police are trying to solve an expensive case of criminal mischief. It happened overnight in Lufkin.

Sometime between 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and 7:00 p.m. Thursday, someone cut 1,800 feet of fiber optic cable into many pieces.

The cable itself is worth about $5,000, but it will cost another $15,000 in labor to re-lay the telecommunications cable.

Site Inspector Paul Brockington said, "There is no scrap value to this cable. Its only value is in communications. So, whoever did this, if they thought they were getting some copper, there's no copper at all inside. It's useless."

The cable is at a work site on Atkinson Drive in Lufkin. If you have any information about the crime, call the Lufkin Police Department or Crime Stoppers at (936) 639-TIPS.
