Kinky Controversy

by Larry Little

Gubernatorial Candidate Kinky Friedman caused controversy weeks ago when he made derogatory comments about some hurricane Katrina evacuees. "He called them crackheads and used some other word to describe them," says Nacogdoches NAACP President John Morrison.

There is a new controversy in East Texas surrounding Kinky after an old interview surfaced. John Morrison says Friedman's comments are being taken seriously by the NAACP, but he is not taking Kinky's comments as a personal insult. "It doesn't make me angry but I don't have any faith in a guy that will stoop that low," say Morrison.

Morrison does not believe Kinky's comments will cost him votes from the black community. "I really don't think Friedman will get many black votes, because there are a lot of blacks don't even know him. I didn't know who he was until he was running for governor," says Morrison.

Kinky supporters in East Texas say this is all politics and his comments are being taken out of context. This November it will up to the voters to decide who should be governor.
