Texans Cut Cornerback

The Houston Texans today released cornerback Phillip Buchanon

Buchanon, who was a first-round pick in 2002, was traded to Houston from Oakland before last season in exchange for second- and third-round picks in the 2006 draft.

He rarely played on defense this season after suffering from a laundry list of minor injuries including a sprained ankle and bruised ribs.

Buchanon didn't record a tackle until this week when he had two while briefly filling in for Dunta Robinson, who had cramps. Buchanon saw limited action returning punts and kicks with eight punt returns for 79 yards and five kick returns for 106 yards. Coach Gary Kubiak says he expected Buchanon to step up when Demarcus Faggins fractured his foot in training camp. That never happened.

The move clears a roster spot for linebacker Kailee Wong, who's been on the physically unable to perform list recovering from knee surgery.
