Tornado Rips Through East Texas Town

A tornado swept through Newton County Monday, knocking down trees all over the area. Tuesday was all about cleanup for several families in Newton.

The tornado caused minor wind damage to several homes, but ripped the roofs off others. The Morgan Family in Wiergate believes they got lucky during Hurricane Rita, but the damage done to their home during Monday's storm made up for what they missed last September.

Kurt Morgan said, "A tree fell on the roof. It knocked out a window and threw glass all throughout our living room floor, busted the fence down, tore up some lawn furniture.  For us, it's definitely worse than Rita because we didn't get a tree on our house during Rita."

Classes in Burkeville and Newton were called off Tuesday.
