Tobacco retailers were told months ago prices would increase on cigarettes on September 1st, 2006. The date has changed and it is official, prices will increase on January 1, 2007. The price increase is going to cost all retailers but mainly independent retailers.
This week East Texas tobacco retailers received a letter from the state comptroller advising them of the $1 price tax increase on a pack of cigarettes, but the letter also warned retailers not to overstock cigarettes before January 1st, 2007, because taxes must be paid on excess inventories bought before 2007.
