Proud Of East Texas:Gussie Nell Davis

Sixty-six years ago an idea was born right here in East Texas that changed football half-times forever. Thanks to Gussie Nell Davis and the Kilgore Rangerettes, football half-times throughout the country are now filled with entertainment and glamour.

The Rangerettes came into being in 1940 when the Kilgore College President ordered Davis to come up with something "to keep the crowds in the stands during halftime". Not only did the Rangerettes' precision dance routines keep crowds in the stands, but they gave birth to a new art form.

Gussie Nell Davis was Director ofthe Kilgore Rangerettes for 40 years. She died in 1994. Saturday, October 28th, during Kilgore College Homecoming and 100th Birthday Celebration, Davis will be honored.  The Gussie Nell Davis Rangerette Residence, financed by former Rangerette Kathryn Heller Zwick and her husband Nick, will be dedicated.
