Stoves are Meant for Cooking, Not Heating

by Ramonica R. Jones

When you wake up Thursday morning, temperatures in East Texas will be much lower than they were Wednesday, but you need to be careful when heating your home.

No matter how cold it gets, never use your kitchen stove or any other cooking appliance to heat your home. When buying a portable heater, make sure it has automatic shut-off technology that stops it from operating if the heater tips over.

Many people will use a space heater to stay warm over the next couple days. Be sure to keep plenty of distance between the heater and other objects in your home to avoid a fire. Firefighters recommend at least three feet of clearance.
