Thursday, there was speculation that Stephen F. Austin head football coach Robert McFarland would be extended an opportunity to become a member of the Iowa State University football coaching staff.

It's official. McFarland was contacted by Gene Chizik and extended an offer to become the Cyclones' offensive coordinator.

McFarland held a meeting at 3 p.m. today at S.F.A. to inform the Lumberjacks.

This was a tough decision for McFarland, due to the that fact only 11 seniors are leaving and the majority of S.F.A.'s team returning in 2007 will be sophomores or juniors.

McFarland compiled a 9-13 record during his two seasons as the Lumberjacks' head football coach.

Chizik and McFarland have a long history as friends and co-workers as assistant coaches at other college football programs, including Stephen F. Austin.
