It's been nearly a year since LeKendrick Yarbrough collapsed and died from heart complications during a basketball game in Timpson. "We are doing pretty good. Like now, it will probably be hard with the holidays, and this will be the first Christmas without him," says LeKendrick's cousin, Charleston Johnson.
The small community of Timpson vows to never forget young LeKendrick. For months now, members of the First Smyrna United Missionary Church have sponsored fundraisers to help build a basketball court behind their church in LeKendrick's honor. The church is doing this "just to keep his memory alive, and we've also set up a scholarship fund. Like I said, just to keep his memory going," says Johnson.
Charleston and family members say his memory will live on because of community support. "From everything within us, we would just like to tell everyone we appreciate everything y'all have done -- the support, the prayers, the money and the donations. God bless y'all because y'all have been a blessing to us, also," says Johnson.
Donations can be made to the Citizens Bank in Center to the LeKendrick Yarbrough Scholarship Fund.
