Hot-shooting UNT Squad Tops SFA
Alexander scores season-high 22 for Lumberjacks
NACOGDOCHES, Texas ? Sophomore forward Josh Alexander scored a season-high 22 points Wednesday night, but it wasn?t enough to topple a hot-shooting North Texas team. The Mean Green shot 66 percent from the floor Wednesday night to collect a 76-70 win over the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The loss is SFA?s first at home this season and evens the Lumberjacks? record at 4-4.
North Texas built an 11-point lead by the break, thanks to the Mean Green?s 73-percent effort from the floor in the first half. UNT cooled somewhat in the second half, but not enough for the Lumberjacks ? who shot 40 percent ? to gain much ground.
Alexander hit four of his seven 3-point attempts and went 8-of-9 at the foul stripe in leading all scorers. He hit a 3-pointer then turned a mid-court steal into a fast-break layup to cap a 17-7 run that drew SFA to within four points (55-51) with 13:23 left in the second half. The Lumberjacks later made it a three-point game on a layup by senior guard Keith Hardaway, but UNT answered with a Keith Wooden jumper and hit six of its next eight shots to stretch the lead back out to 14 points
(70-56) with 2:15 to play.
Sophomore center Matt Kingsley scored 16 points to join Alexander in double figures. He also had a game-high seven rebounds. Senior guard Chaz Dykes added 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Despite getting outrebounded, 31-21, SFA hauled in 10 offensive boards and scored 15 second-chance points to UNT?s seven. But bench points, a strength for SFA all season, were hard to come by on Wednesday. The Lumberjacks entered the game averaging 14 bench points per contest more than their opposition. But five players were held scoreless Wednesday, and leading scorer Antuane Miller was held to seven points in backup duty as the UNT reserves outscored the SFA bench, 20-16. Hardaway came off the bench to score nine points.
Calvin Watson scored 21 points to lead the Mean Green (6-2). Wooden finished with 15 points, Ben Bell scored 11, and Michael Sturns added 10.
SFA will return to action Saturday, when the Lumberjacks host Louisiana-Lafayette. The game against the Ragin? Cajuns is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
