Jim Porter is literally half the man he used to be, and says shedding the unwanted pounds was far from easy.

"I lost a 155 pounds here using proper nutrition, the aerobics, and weights, and I've kept it off for 13 years now," said Porter.

Porter is a regular at LiveWell Athletic Club in Lufkin. But, with the New Year right around the corner, lots of new people will soon be filling up East Texas gyms.

"We're expecting an increase. Mostly everybody's New Year's resolution is to lose weight and just to make them feel good about themselves, but it will be determination that will actually keep them in the gym," said LiveWell employee Jeremey Harris.

"There's a lot of enthusiasm around January the 1st through about the 31st, and then they kind of get discouraged. Maybe they have a higher expectation. You need to lose, maybe, a pound a week at the most, and they want instant results," added Porter.

As you can see, there is plenty of equipment to choose from here at the gym. But experts emphasize the fact that different machines work different parts of your body and fit specific workout plans for certain people.

"Each machine has a certain part of the body that it will work out. So by doing the circuit like that, it will keep your heart up, and you can lose weight like that also," Porter added.

Porter also has a word of advice for those hoping to shape up this New Year.

"The thing I need to emphasize for everybody is not to do it for your husband or your wife, do it for yourself."

With that being said, Porter hopes his long road to fitness will help inspire others to get in shape and stay in shape long term.
