Federal Offices Closed Tuesday

News Release:

By Executive Order of President George W. Bush, all executive departments, independent organizations, and other agencies of the Federal government will be closed on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, as a mark of respect for Gerald R. Ford, the thirty-eighth President of the United States.

While many Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) administrative offices will be closed, patient care services including scheduled clinic appointments, hospitalizations, surgeries, and the Emergency Room will continue without interruption on January 2, 2007 to ensure veterans have timely access to health care.

This decision was made because more than 2,500 patients are scheduled that day for outpatient visits at the MEDVAMC, the Texas City Community Based Outpatient Clinic, the Galveston Community Based Outpatient Clinic, the Beaumont VA Outpatient Clinic, and the Charles Wilson VA Outpatient Clinic in Lufkin. Veterans are strongly encouraged to keep their appointments.

Veterans with questions or health care concerns are advised to call the VA Network Telecare Center at (713) 794-8985 or toll-free 1 (800) 639-5137. Registered nurses, pharmacists, and administrative clerks at the VA Network Telecare Center are ready to answer veteran health care questions 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  The VA Network Telecare Center is not for life-threatening emergencies. Veterans with life-threatening emergencies should immediately call 911.

Note:  There will be no mail service Tuesday.  Normal service resumes Wednesday.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
