Lufkin Police Report - 01/09/07

TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS:  1100 block of Atkinson Dr.  Twenty-year-old Jose A. Escobedo of Lufkin was arrested on a felony warrant for racing after an investigation into the death of Gustavo B. Dela Paz on November 5, 2006 in a car accident on Atkinson Dr.  Racing is a second degree felony if someone dies as a result of racing on a roadway.

BURGLARY OF A BUILDING:  2215 E. Denman Ave. (Polk's Pick It Up).  Officers responding to an active burglary alarm at Polk's Pick It Up found that someone had cut the electricity to the building and broken a front window out of the business Tuesday morning about 2:20 a.m.  Management responded and noted nothing missing on a first inspection, and it didn't appear as if anyone gained entry into the store.

THEFT:  4600 S. Medford Dr. (Lufkin Mall).  A gray Motorola RAZR cell phone was stolen from the Sprint kiosk in the Lufkin Mall Monday afternoon.

THEFT:  407 Brentwood Dr. (Sam's Club).  An arrest in Houston led to a statement by a suspect that merchandise had been stolen from Sam's in Lufkin.  The report doesn't specify what merchandise was stolen, but it's believed to be over $1000 worth of property that was stolen from the Lufkin store on Saturday, January 6th.

ASSAULT:  700 block of S. Timberland Dr.  A man reported that he encountered an ex-girlfriend inside a shop and they argued.  The man reported that the woman hit him in the face with a half-eaten chicken leg.  The man was not injured.

HARASSMENT:  503 John Redditt Dr.  A woman reported receiving a phone message at work threatening her life.  The call came from an unknown phone number.

BURGLARY OF A HABITATION:  3000 S. First St.  A model apartment was broken into sometime Monday morning and a television and a DVD/VCR combo were stolen.

INVESTIGATION OF A DEATH:  Lufkin Police are investigating the worksite death of 21-year-old José Bermudez that occurred Monday afternoon around 4:20 p.m.  Bermudez was working with a tree cutting crew for Asplundh Tree Service in the woods off the 2900 block of S. John Redditt Dr. and was killed by a falling tree.  Bermudez suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.  The death appears to be accidental.
