M.L.K. Day Celebrations Planned for East Texas

On Monday, the country will honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The celebration in Lufkin gets bigger every year with hundreds of community members coming together.

A march is planned for Monday just before the annual Dunbar Hall of Honor Ceremony.

The 2007 Hall of Fame inductees are Joe Morris Thompson and Patsy McGee Brown. Thompson once served as information officer for the United States government - a position created by former President Bill Clinton.

McGee Brown is a longtime educator and retired principal with the Houston school district.

There are many activities planned across East Texas Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Day. The annual march in Lufkin starts at noon on Monday followed by the Dunbar Hall of Honor Induction Ceremony at 1:00 p.m.

Marchers will meet at the old Homer Garrison Federal Building in Lufkin at 11:00 a.m. Motorcade vehicles will meet at the civic center on First Street.

Also in Lufkin on Monday morning, the North Redland Ladies Club will have an M.L.K. celebration starting at 10:00 a.m. Their march will begin at Flemmings Park near the corner of FM 2864 and Highway 112 in the Redland community.
