A Victim Forgives

by Larry Little

Last week Artemis Smith confessed to robbing and assaulting Francis Hale at her Nacogdoches home in June of last year after she returned from a morning walk. This past Friday Mrs. Hale had to face the man she say brutally attacked her. It was the first time she saw Artemis Smith since the attack at her Nacogdoches home "It was kind of hard at first, we both avoided eye contact at first," says Francis Hale.

Francis says memories of smith hitting her in the head with the butt of a rifle kept playing over and over in her head, but when the judge sentenced Artemis Smith for his crimes, she felt relieved. "I felt like since I had my privacy invaded. I was hurt physically, it felt good to know he was fixing to pay, but at the same time he knew he had done wrong and said so and he was ready to pay for what he had done," says Francis Hale.

In court Smith apologized to Francis and Jimmy Hale and they forgave him.   Smith may be eligible for parole in 25 years.
