Every day, thousands of listeners tune in to Christian radio stations KSWP and KAVX. "Both of our stations are family friendly. One of our stations is music-intensive adult contemporary music station, and the other is a lot of ministry, teaching and talk, and praise and worship," says Al Ross, station manager of KSWP/KAVX.
Early this morning, vandals damaged the station's tower just of Highway 103 East, putting the religious listener-supported radio stations off the air, and causing thousands of dollars worth of damage.
"We were off the air from 1:48 a.m. to 6:48 a.m. We first thought it was a power outage because that will occur from time to time. That's when we found out the vandals had come in," says Ross.
Authorities don't believe vandals targeted the Christian radio stations because other East Texas radio stations and communication companies also suffered a loss. "At least it's not what it could have been, because if they would have hurt the antenna or tower, we could have bounced up to $3- or $400,000, and it didn't do that," says Ross.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the tower vandalism to contact the Angelina County Authorities.
