Overnight Fire

East Texas firefighters were busy overnight battling an apartment fire in Smith County. The fire started around two this morning (Friday) at the Hillside Plaza Townhouse apartments on Cooper street in Lindale. Numerous fire departments were called to the fire. Investigators tell the East Texas News a total of seven people lived in the complex. They say they will be back at the site later to investigate the damage for a cause. Fire officials say they have not had any reports of injuries at this time.

Fatal Car Crash

An East Texas man is killed in a car crash in Shelby County. It happened just northwest of Center on Farm to Market road 2026. 51-year old Marty Brittain of Center was headed east when his pickup left the road and hit two culverts.

Car-Train Wreck

A driver, hit by a train, could soon be released from the hospital. 17-year old Anthony Freddarius was thrown from his car Wednesday when it collided with a Union Pacific train in Timpson, northeast of Nacogdoches. Witnesses told authorities the teen did not slow down and drove right through the railroad crossing.

Railroad Sting Operation

Tyler Police caught drivers Thursday crossing railroad tracks when they were not supposed to. A sting operation called "Operation Lifesaver' targeted drivers ignoring warning lights and guards. Police say if you try to beat the train, you're playing with your life. "They (trains) just don't stop on a dime like sometimes you can a car, but we're just trying to get people to slow down and stop at the flashing lights and crossing guards," said Officer J.D. Smith. In all, Tyler police issued 12 tickets to drivers caught during the sting. Each ticket with a fine up to $500.

A&M Basketball Coach Leaving

Texas A&M basketball coach Billy Gillespie has been selected as the new basketball coach for the University of Kentucky. He led the Aggies two rounds deep into the N-C-A-A playoffs and made Texas A&M into a basketball school. Kentucky will introduce Billy Gillispie as its new basketball coach today (Friday). That's what a person familiar with the search process told The Associated Press. Gillispie led Texas A-and-M to the N-C-double-A tournament's round of 16 this year for the first time since 1980, will be introduced at a pep rally today at Memorial Coliseum. That's according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity pending

an official announcement. The Wildcats turned to Gillispie after another Billy --Florida's Billy Donovan -- decided yesterday to stay with the Gators.

Intoxication Manslaughter Sentencing

An East Texas man will spend time in prison after pleading guilty to a deadly drunk driving crash. 30-year old Timothy Schroer of jasper had been drinking just before he crashed into the car driven by a 21-year old woman last year, killing her. Schroer pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter. A judge sentenced him to 12 years behind bars.

    More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.     Deputies with the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office made two felony drug arrests and seized marijuana, Prometh VC with codeine, hydrocodone, Alprazolam, and ecstasy after a traffic stop near the intersection of Robb and Jefferson streets late Tuesday night.
