Lufkin Shooting Latest

Gunshots rang out in a Lufkin neighborhood.

Investigators tell us a  23-year-old man shot his ex-girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.  Witnesses say 21-year-old Mykesha Spencer was shot in the mouth outside of a house on Garvan Street in Lufkin.

Investigators believe 23-year-old Fred Hurts, Jr. was the shooter.  Hurst left the scene and later killed himself apparently with the same gun inside a house north of Lufkin in the community of Cedar Grove.

Spencer's family members tell us Spencer and Hurst had ended their three-year relationship. But they stayed in touch with each other to take care of their one-year-old son. Relatives can't believe something like this happened between the couple.

"He was a nice little kid to me and around the whole family. And I don't know what the idea of him doing that was about. She's a sweet girl. That's my niece. But like I said, I don't know, man. I don't know," Spencer's uncle, Daryl Lewis said.

Family members tell us Spencer's condition was originally stable, but worsened after she was taken to a Lufkin hospital. They tell us she was later airlifted to a Houston hospital for emergency surgery.
