Texas Lawmakers

Dozens of Democratic and Republican lawmakers walked out of the Texas House to protest House Speaker Tom Craddick's leadership. The walkout against Craddick's refusal to step down brought work to a halt just hours before the session was to end. It could kill several major bills involving state parks, water issues and other matters. The legislature is expected to reconvene this afternoon.

Weekend Boating Accident

A day out on the water sends one East Texas woman to the hospital. Authorities say the woman was inured after a boat accident. They say she was swimming at the Twin Dykes Marine Island near Etoile when she was run over by a boat, severing one of her legs. A Lufkin man has reportedly been arrested and charged with intoxication assault. The victim is hospitalized in Nacogdoches. Watch continuing coverage of this story on KTRE's East Texas News at 6.

Deadly Traffic Accident

Two East Texans are killed in a weekend accident. D-P-S troopers say it happened just after 5 yesterday afternoon on F-M 14, two miles north of Hawkins. Billy Ray Maricle and Tammy Joe Maricle of Quitman were killed after their S-U-V lost control in the rain, hitting another truck. The driver of that truck, 34 year old Patrick Jenison of Big Sandy is listed in serious condition.

Holiday Safety

During this long holiday period, law enforcement officers are urging drivers to buckle up, don't drink and drive and to drive defensively. Many East Texans will be on the roads and extra patrol will be out to help make sure you're safe. Authorities say remember, if you're doing to drink, be responsible.

Blueberry Festival Volunteers

A plea for volunteers is going out. Your help is needed at the upcoming Blueberry Festival in Nacogdoches. Each year Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful makes sure the downtown area stays clean during the festival. The agency is asking for volunteers to set up trash cans, pick up litter and clean-up at the end of the festival. The shift is only two hours. The Blueberry Festival is Saturday, June 9th. If you or a group want to help out, contact Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful, or go by its offices inside the Chamber of Commerce building.

Scholarship Fundraiser for fallen Officer

The first Dale Geddie Memorial race took place this weekend at Texas Dirt Motorplex. The former Smith County constable worked security at the Motorplex. Many people who knew and loved constable Geddie attended Sunday's event. The race was held to honor him and raise money for the scholarship fund in his name.

East Texas Weather

Showers and thunderstorms will re-develop during today across Deep East Texas, with about a 50 percent or better coverage of activity. Heavy rains and frequent lightning will persist. Rainfall amounts of one to two inches could be expected in some heavier showers, so there could be flash flooding in areas that have already received plenty of rain recently.
