Summer school and TAKS testing tutorials are now underway in most East Texas communities. Nacogdoches middle school children have been attending summer school for about a week. High school students started their summer classes Wednesday morning.
Summer school gives students an opportunity to catch up on course work so they won't be held back. Deatrick Stigall, a summer school facilitator for middle school students said, " Our kids are not performing to the level our state expects them to and we have accountability issues, No Child Left Behind issues and we just have to try to make sure we can reach all of those students before they move on to the next grade level."
Summer school enrollment is up in Nacogdoches. Tough rules are enforced. A student is expelled and forced to repeat a grade if they're sent to the office more than twice for misbehaving.
