For 40 years the Ellen trout zoo in Lufkin has been a part of this community. And it's grown tremendously since it first opened in 1967. When it opened it was because of a hippo that one local man got as a Christmas present. He then donated it to help start the zoo.
Now there are more animals than you can count and they are constantly expanding. Plans are even in the works right now to add a new education building. And those involved are very proud.
The community along with the city of Lufkin have made the zoo what it is today. And the community joined together today to celebrate a zoo that has been great to them.
